Horror Headlines: Monday May 13th, 2013

Red Sea Media has made the smart move of picking up the distribution right to "Squirrels", a new film about a small town being terrorized by the fuzzy little nut munchers. Produced by the same folks that brought you "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" there's no word on a cast yet but I think if Tiffany is free she's a sure fire lock to play the leading lady. Keep your fingers crossed.

Mother of god. Warner Bros has picked up the rights to Ryan Gosling's directorial debut titled "How To Catch a Monster". Need more? Christina Hendricks has signed on as the leading lady for the film about a mother whose son discovers a secret road leading to the underworld. I swear to god my keyboard just burst into flames from all this sex.

Salma Hayek is confirmed to be starring in "Everly", a new film from the one and only Joe Lynch. The film is about a woman who must fight her way through a horde of assassins sent by her mob boss ex. What's the interesting point here is that the entire film will be shot in one room which now that I think of it makes me think this entire thing was just one big creepy way for Joe Lynch to be able to lock himself in a room with Selma Hayek for a month.

Joe Dante is teaming up with Simon Pegg for a big screen adaptation of "Casting the Runes" by M.R. James. The story follows a blogger who's investigating the suicide of a celebrity and the self help guru connected to the death. The story was originally written close to 100 years ago which is amazing because they didn't even have the internet back then so how the hell would anyone know what a blogger is? This James guy must have had ESPN or some crap.

In Real People News:

A 31 year old sex ed teacher in Texas is accused of having sex with two 13 year old students. Seems kind of obvious really.

A Phoenix woman is under arrest after she killed a man by running him over with her car and then called 911 to report the damage. Yes she was drunk and yes her mug shot is amazing.

The Hole (REVIEW)

Joe Dante is a name synonymous with horror and horror comedy. His credits include such well received genre films like "Gremlins", "The 'Burbs", "Piranha" and "The Howling". The other common thread among this quartet? They're 80s movies (ok Piranha was '78, but you get my point). And with "The Hole" Dante seems to be right back in his comfort zone using elements that could've worked in just about any form over the past 35 years.

Horror Headlines: Thursday September 27th, 2012

While Joe finalizes his move to Chicago Casey and I will be helping out on the news desk. Today's random thought? People who refer to podcasts as having "seasons" are dumb and they should stop. That is all.

Check out the interior of Eli Roth's "Goretorium" haunted house in Las Vegas. If you follow him on twitter he was posting pictures of lines around the block for its opening last night. Sounds great, except you'd have to live in Vegas and that sounds awful.

People are using GIF's now to promote their horror films, like that one for the Ethan Hawke film "Sinister". I could have used a few GIF's of Jennifer Lawrence last week to keep me interested in "House at the End of the Street"... missed opportunity.

Go behind the scenes of "Hotel Transylvania". We decided it looked too "Dreamworksy" for us to review it on the podcast. If a vampire doesn't make that stupid Dreamworks face at one point I'll give you my TV.

Joe Dante has announced some select screening dates and cities for "The Hole 3D". This has led other horror site owners to nearly have an aneurysm trying to come up with pun headlines. Get it, HE'S OPENING HIS HOLE. Congrats guys, we're all stupider for having read that.

In Real People News:

By the time you find yourself being kicked out of a porn store while drunk, you've probably already made a few bad decisions in life. Let's not compound it by biting the clerk in the leg. That's just not classy.

Four New Clips From "The Howling Reborn"

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Not that the "The Howling" movies were ever mighty but Joe Dante's original has a special spot in most horror fan's hearts and the sequels were always good for a watch. Wasn't there one where a tiny little werewolf was birthed and then we got to see it's long journey from it's mother poom poom up to her nipple? Or did I make that all up in my head?

Netflix Streaming Friday - Week of October 29, 2010

Horror is a particularly cyclical genre of film. With the recent releases of films like "Grindhouse", "Black Dynamite", "Machete" and the announcement of "Hobo with a Shotgun", it would be a pretty fair statement to say that we're in the midst of a modern Grindhouse revival. Luckily for those of us looking for a history lesson, Netflix has recently added the documentary "American Grindhouse" to their Instant Stream. Featuring interviews with iconic Grindhouse stars/directors (including Joe Dante, John Landis, Herschell Gordan Lewis and Fred Williamson), "American Grindhouse" explores the original Grindhouse movement and should get any horror fan out there up to speed in time for the next modern Grindhouse release.

Horror Headlines: Friday September 10th, 2010

A new TV spot for the much anticipated AMC series "The Walking Dead" has popped up. It's 15 seconds of what might be considered the most important piece of television ever imagined. Lies, it's all lies. I don't even know what the spot means.

Did I miss the memo that exorcism movies are the new hotness? I must have because here's a new poster and some images from the upcoming flick "The Possession of Emma Evans" that will be released this coming December. I can't wait for all the high school girls to start having Linda Blair posters hanging in their rooms.

If you've still got your hopes up for a "Gremlins 3," you might want to get some tissues ready. Joe Dante recently sat down to discuss his new film "The Hole" and crushed any hopes of him being involved with a new Gremlins film. Buck up camper, it'll be alright. I'm sure a 3D remake of the original will be in the works soon.

In Real People News:

Those nutty Germans have created a giant maze in the shape of a giant sausage in order to help educate the risks associated with eating the popular fast food. A giant maze... in the shape of a sausage... Is there actual sausage in the maze? Don't answer that...I'm already packing my bags.

1924 - A judge in Chicago sentenced Nathan Leopold Jr. and Richard Loeb to life in prison for the murder of 14-year-old Bobby Franks - a "thrill killing" that had shocked the nation.

Video: Clip From Joe Dante's "The Hole 3D"

I have to admit, this entire time I thought Joe Dante’s “The Hole” was about… well, a hole. I thought kids find a hole in their house, they play in the hole and eventually grow tired of the hole. The hole gets sad that no one will play with it and eventually takes its own life. Sounds depressing, right? Well the newly released clip from the film which you can view below would lead me to believe that apparently the hole spits out all kinds of creepy things, including a scary ass little girl. I’m big enough to admit I was wrong.

Horror Headlines: Thursday October 29th, 2009

The Syfy Channel has ordered up 13 episodes of the BBC hit series "Being Human". The show revolves around a ghost, a vampire and a werewolf living together as roomates.

Brad Dourif joins Vivica Fox in a new cannibalistic serial rapist thriller called "Junk Yard Dog".

"Evil Dead" is coming to theaters. Read that again. "Evil Dead" is coming back to theaters! That's right, the original movie, not a remake, is being brought back for a midnight run at select theaters across the country.

Joe Dante and Roger Corman team up for a new series available only on Netflix streaming called "Splatter". The included clip at the link looks cheese-tastic, so check it out. And uh... you know, I heard about this cool place to get Netflix if you wanted to give it a watch...

In Real People News:

A New Jersey man uses the 'I'm a fatass' defense to dodge murder charges. At 5'8" and 285 lbs, he claims there's just no way he could have pulled it off.

Jailers in a Northern Indiana lockup face charge for forgetting a man in his cell for 12 hours. Being from Northern Indiana myself, I'm really not surprised.

Five Filipino transvestites face charges of drugging men and robbing them blind. Chances are, if they fell for the transvestites, they were already drugged.

Behind The Scenes Of "The Hole" With Bruce Dern

It’s been 25 years since Joe Dante directed “Gremlins” and warmed his way into our tiny little hearts. Since then he’s directed a ton of other films but nothing that really had the same impact as the 1984 critter invasion flick. Now with “The Hole”, he might just have done it again. At the very least it’s another film that’s going to be shot in 3D and should have some pretty amazing visuals.

Horror Headlines: Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Guillermo Del Toro discusses his inspiration for his "Strain" trilogy of vampire novels, the first of which is due to hit bookshelves on Junes 2nd.

Robert Downey JR wants to play Edgar Allen Poe in a script written by Sylvester Stallone. I know, I thought he was off drugs too, this is so sad. (JOKE, people)

So, we decided the other day that this new Filmax flick "Paintball" has a cool trailer, but was really playing the paintball schtick up way too much for me to take it seriously. As you can see though, they've really kept it classy with the poster. UGH.

Adam Green is hoping he'll get to shoot "Hatchet 2" next winter. Nothing is set in stone yet, but the idea and the interest is there, now it's just all about the pieces coming together. I for one would definitely watch if Green were to turn out another hilarious slasher in this series.

Speaking of interesting, if not totally amazing slasher films, it turns out that there's a Tobe Hooper-less sequel to his "Toolbox Murders" remake currently in the works. This one promises to "rise far above the last Toolbox". Guess we'll see.

Joe Dante won't ever write or direct a "Gremlins 3", although he does see it happening at some point in the future (just without him, apparently). He also says he thinks the guys who made that infamous "fan film" should be responsible for another sequel, and that he's currently working on two spectacular Blurays of the original films.

In Real People News:

Cult leader and convicted pedophile escapes prison via helicopter. I take back what I said about the prison escape scene in last year's "Prom Night", this story actually makes that realistic in comparison.

Moral of this story, you don't want to ever meet the man who can take repeated taserings and still come up shooting. If you do, he's probably going to kill the shit out of you, just because he can.

Here's a way to get back at your father for all those chores you had to do when you were a kid... how about cut out his pacemaker with a pocket knife? I kid, of course, but the story at the link proves that it's actually possible to do such a thing. Read at your own risk.
