Horror Icon mini-Marathon: TI WEST

The horror genre is an eclectic genre, with films that run the gamut from quiet and thoughtful ruminations on human existence to noisy and barely contained gore and chaos. As a result, many of the films (and filmmakers) working in the genre are divisive figures. One such divisive figure, known for his deliberate pacing, quiet mood creation, and excellent attention to detail, is director Ti West. As his new film, “The Sacrament,” prepares for its theatrical release, it’s worth noting his career up to this point.

Trailer: Ti West's "Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever"

What a coincidence. The same week we review Ti West's "House of the Devil", his forsaken horror film "Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever" finally has a trailer land online. Word is that West had a falling out with Lionsgate over the film. Combine that with the fact that this is coming out about 5 years after anyone cares, and you have to wonder if it will even make a blip on horror fan's radars. Still, it's polar opposite material from "House", so I'm intrigued to see how West (and the Editors at Lionsgate) handle it.

Ti West says "Cabin Fever 2" isn't really worth seeing. And he's the director, so that's probably not a good thing.

"Paranormal Activity", a film shot entirely from the POV of security cameras in a couple's haunted home, has been given an R rating by the MPAA. No word on release date yet, but this one has been gaining buzz on the festival circuit for a while now, so hopefully we'll hear more soon.

Check out the creature from "Pandorum" in this clip from the film, which gets released September 25th. I haven't heard a lot on this in terms of quality, but it looks highly solid to me.

In Real People News:

This story is kind of like how Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci call themselves "The Wet Bandits" in "Home Alone". Only I guess this guy would call himself "The Poop Bandit". Doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

Of all the things that would leave a scar on a 9 year old mind, I'm thinking seeing a man climb out of the hole beneath a toilet is probably pretty high up there.

On this day in history:

1941: At Auschwitz, the Germans conduct a live trial on 600 Russian POWs and 298 sick prisoners to test the lethality of an insecticide known as Zyklon-B. It turns out to be extremely effective at killing people.

Eliza Dushku starring film "Open Graves" premieres on the Syfy channel on September 19th. I have no idea what it's about but every production still has her in a bikini. I'm onto your game, Syfy.

Rob Zombie has just locked his edit of "Halloween 2", and is sending it off for all the usual post processing jazz. Oh, and he posted a picture of Michael Myers giving us the finger... he's so wild and edgy, that guy.

I suppose this is accurate considering the source... but Variety reports that Sam Raimi will be directing "Warcraft", the big budget adaptation of the popular MMO World of Warcraft. Whoa.

The effects guys behind the "Nightmare on Elm St." remake describe Freddy's look as more of a recovered burn victim. They also talk in this report about Jackie Earle Haley having a smaller nose than Robert Englund, and how that played into the makeup. Pretty decent read if you're interested.

Two more stills from "Cabin Fever 2: Spring Break". Good news, the party man is back!

In Real People News:

Nothing to see here folks, just another case of a teenager paying his bi-sexual friend he met in a furry chatroom to kill his parents and bite off his penis. Holy Moses, I need to sit down for a minute after writing that sentence.

Don't huff gas if you intend on getting tased... you might just burst into flames, and that wouldn't be good for anyone.

1587: Roanoke, the colony founded by Sir Walter Raleigh, is found to be missing.

Cool new motion poster for "Saw VI". This seems to be the new studio trend and I like it, except of course for the incredibly obnoxious music that you can't control. Might want to do something about that, guys.

The Syfy channel's remake of "Children of the Corn" will debut in September... just in time for harvest!

No one's sure exactly how it is going to happen, but news was reported yesterday that the original "Saw" is going to be converted into the new "Real-D" 3D technology. Would you pay to see the film again in a theater, with the new spin?

I can't possibly imagine that this is the first still from "Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever", a film that seems like it's been in development for about 6 years now, but that's what the internet tells me. It was directed by a talented guy named Ti West, which is good, but all of the delays and the behind the scenes rumors do not give me hope.

"The Strangers 2" begins filming in September. Any ideas for a subtitle? How about "The Strangers 2: Even Strangier".

In Real People News:

Woman shoots husband, uses the old "I was trying to release demons from his crotch defense". Ahhhhh yes, THAT defense, it's the first thing they teach you at law school.

This guy holds the record for witnessing the most executions in history. I bet he gets a lot of chicks.

On this day in history:

1981: In Milwaukee, George Carlin is arrested for obscenity and disorderly conduct for performing his "Seven Dirty Words" routine in front of a group of wheelchair-bound children. He is released after posting $150 bail.
