The Inspiration Behind "The Rite"

The whole "inspired by true events" schtick that often pops up in the opening credits of a movie, is used so often nowadays, that I rarely even pay it a second thought. But apparently, "The Rite" starring Anthony Hopkins actually WAS based in part on the real life experiences of a Catholic priest named Father Gary Thomas, who became certified to perform exorcisms after completing 40 hours of study at the Vatican. It was during this time that he met journalist Matt Baglio, author of "The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist," which inspired the movie.

The Rite (REVIEW)

Anthony Hopkins knows The Rite

Exorcism films can take one of two perspectives: the first, and more common, is that of the possessed. Here films such as "The Unborn" or "A Haunting in Connecticut" establish a connection between the audience and an individual suffering at the whims of ungodly and unknowable forces. This perspective allows us access to the fears and pains of those most directly affected.

Horror Headlines: Tuesday January 4th, 2011

Director Neil Blomkamp is gearing up for his "District 9" follow up by getting Jodie Foster to climb aboard "Elysium". Little is known about the film's plot other than it takes place on a distant planet in the far future. Ms. Foster will be joining Matt Damon and Sharlto Copely, so at least it looks promising.

Anthony Hopkins is preparing to try and creep us out once again with his upcoming supernatural church thriller, "The Rite". The marketing machine is starting to spin up, so be sure to check out the new TV spots and posters at the link.

Franz Kafka's literary classic "Metamorphosis" is finally being brought to the big screen by a whole bunch of people you've never heard of!

In Real People News:

Merry Christmas! Reports say that hundreds of parishioners at a NY church may have been exposed to Hepatitis A during communion on Christmas Day.

On this day in history:

1964 - The Boston Strangler Albert DeSalvo kills his final victim, Mary Sullivan, age 19, at her Charles Street apartment.

Horror Headlines: Tuesday December 28th, 2010

Here's a gang of new shots from Anthony Hopkins' new film "The Rite" which comes out on January 28th. The film revolves around a skeptical student at an exorcism school and features the most disappointing panty raid you've ever seen.

Now sit down kids and I'll tell you about how video games used to be played on the PC and were mostly just a lot of pointing and clicking. And by far my favorite of the genre was "7th Guest" which will be landing on your iPhone and iPad in the near future. Of course I never saw a reason to have an iPad until now and I refuse to pay for one just to play a 20 year old game, but still, this is awesome news.

Joe R. Lansdale, the guy who wrote "Bubba Ho Tep" among other things, will see his heartwarming zombie story "Christmas with the Dead" made into a movie sometime next year. Yet more proof that if you wait long enough you'll never have to read another book again.

Here's a trailer for the Swedish ax murderer flick "Blood Runs Cold". Apparently the film was shot on a budget of just 5k, but honestly it looks so good you can hardly tell. Which is a bummer because I wanted nothing more in this world than to make some sarcastic comments about the Swedes. You win this round!

In Real People News:

A man in San Diego is under arrest after he barged into his father's room and attacked him with a samurai sword. There is absolutely no reason anyone should be allowed to own a samurai sword. If you have one sitting on your mantel then you're really just waiting for a friend to get drunk and stab you, and guess what, you'll deserve it.

Now this is more like it. A drunk teen in Connecticut is being brought up on charges after assaulting her father with a Christmas Tree. Mean? Yes, but check out the picture of her and tell me you haven't fallen in love with her hair. Tell me! That's right I didn't think so.

Horror Headlines: Friday December 10th, 2010

Inspired by true events? Anthony Hopkins? Exorcism? Movie? These are all words you can read! There also words that describe the film "The Rite" which finally has a trailer. We're off to a good start today.

Patrick Alvarez, someone I have no idea about, has been tapped to direct "Girls", a movie about a girls slumber party gone terribly wrong. Apparently this is not a porn, which might explain the terribly wrong part. Or maybe that's just for me. At the very least there better we a tickle fight.

If you didn't see Duncan Jones' "Moon" then you missed out because it was awesome and it had zero Jake Gyllenhaal's. Unfortunately his follow up "Source Code" has one Jake Gyllenhaal but you should still give it a chance. Based on the new behind the scenes photos of the pic it might have a chance, if that jackass doesn't smile with the stupid goofy face of his.

Johnny Depp on the new Tim Burton film "Dark Shadows" which is based on the cult TV show, "it's gotten f**kin' good". That is all.

In Real People News:

How do you slow down speeding drivers? Set up cardboard cutouts of police women in mini skirts of course. I can't believe it took this long for us to figure that out.

Even with a cold black heart I still couldn't help but get a little choked up about this one. Scrub is an adorable kitten that found it's way home 5 years after it was lost in hurricane Katrina. If you're not crying then you're a monster.

Horror Headlines: Wednesday November 24th, 2010

Here's a new one sheet for the new found footage flick "Apollo 18". The movie is a follow up to the 1996 Academy Award winning film "Apollo 13" staring Tom Hanks. Wait, no? That's not right. Ah whatever just watch the clip.

With Christmas just around the corner it's time to celebrate the holiday season with a horror movie that shows a crazy Santa going around murdering the crap out of people. As luck would have it we have a new red band trailer for "Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale", the Finnish flick that does just that. I feel so warm.

Wait seriously they're making a "Final Destination 5"? That's not a joke. Well at least it isn't going to be in 3D right? Oh god it's going to be in 3D! You build me up with a crazy Santa and then you just cut me right back down with this crap. Well played.

Here's some new screen shots from "The Rite" staring Anthony Hopkins as a Priest who gets involved with an exorcism. When did possession become the big rage? I missed the memo. I can't wait for next Halloween when people just walk around spitting split pea soup at each other.

In Real People News:

I love when people find a way to sexually harass a large group of people in one fatal swoop. Like Canada's industry minister who told a crowd he wants "more Canadian sex stories". Apparently he meant to say "success" but in this economy couldn't we all use a few good sex stories to brighten up our day?

I think I finally found a reason to watch soccer. A amateur player in London was given a red card recently, no idea what that means by the way, and took out his frustration by driving his car out onto the field and trying to run down the official. Alright I'm kidding, this is still not a reason to watch soccer.
