Eli Roth's Big Budget Monster Mash

Eli Roth, the guy that genre fans love to hate and hate to love, spoke with MTV recently and told them all about his ambitious plans when it comes to his career. They include a big-budget sci-fi monster movie, as well as a twist that will no doubt please fans of "Grindhouse".

“I don’t want to say what [the monster is] yet,” Roth teases to MTV. “Once it gets set up, I will let everyone know. It is not aliens or robots or a virus - it’s a little more grounded. But when people hear it they are going to be like ‘That is going to be insane!’.”

Here's the kicker:

“The plan is this: I want to do a huge budget movie, but tack on three weeks to the end of it and shoot ‘Thanksgiving’,” he revealed. “I want to do an $80 million dollar movie, and then schedule three weeks at the end to quickly shoot a $5 million dollar movie.”

"Thanksgiving"!

I get why people soured on Roth. He's cocky, has a big mouth, and for a period of time didn't seem to understand the concept of "oversaturation". Still, he's been away from horror for a while, and personally I'm ready to give him a chance. Yes, I get just as annoyed with him as the next guy, but at the end of the day it's about having a guy with ever-increasing Hollywood cache that's on your side... the side of horror. How many directors do you know these days who not only are interested in making big budget monster movies, but can actually get them funded?

And that's my real point. Even though he makes it hard to be on his side sometimes, ultimately the guy is on the side of horror, whether or not it's the brand of horror that you particularly want to be seeing made. So, at least temporarily, I'll be giving him a break. As for the big announcement regarding what his monster will be? Keep it dialed in to Bloody Good Horror for more as we hear it.
