Selfish Needy Creatures

The Best Metal and Hard Rock Albums of 2011

I have long theorized that music in general works in cycles of twenty to twenty-five years, and that what's old can continually be made new again, like doctoring up that potato salad for one last go-around. To wit, in the 1990's, Pantera, Alice in Chains and the rest of grunge listed their influences as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and the classic rock of the 70's. In the 1970's, Led Zeppelin and their cohorts listed their influences as Chuck Berry, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and the blues and rock musicians of the 50's.

Concert Review - Selfish Needy Creatures

To get to this show, I had to board a boat. Wait, a boat? Yes, a boat. Essentially, the show was a rock and roll river cruise, which is an astoundingly simple and yet profoundly novel concept. You got metal in my recreational boating! You got recreational boating in my metal! It continues to amaze me that this kind of synergy isn’t more realized by adventuresome promoters. Tell me you wouldn’t go to a metal show at a paintball park. In any event, it was like attending the “70,000 Tons of Metal” cruise, but much much colder and smaller. So, more like “7 Tons of Metal.”

Album Review: Selfish Needy Creatures - "The Hard Way"

Selfish Needy Creatures’ “The Hard Way” is an album born in the shadowy, dodgy margins of the road less traveled. The efficient eight-cut record is a straight-forward runaway freight train of reckless abandon and raw, virile authority.

Not at all given to subtlety or restraint, “The Hard Way” is a punishing experience that might as well be the soundtrack to a street fight. Far more focused than the band’s previous EP (and it’s odd to use the word “focused” in reference to something so unrefined,) “The Hard Way” is a rolling diatribe of high-strung, muscled pulverization.

Selfish Needy Creatures' lead singer Vegas talks horror!

Born and bred from the untamed, wild regions of New York, metal up-and-comer Selfish Needy Creatures don't really care if you want to kiss them or kill them. Just so long as you listen. They'll be out again on the road in a few short weeks, but before that tour is scheduled to start, singer/lunatic Vegas Nacy took some time to talk horror movies with me. Take it away, Vegas!
