Episode 37

in

We have a rousing discussion this week on Clive Barker's 1990 film "Nightbreed", including the amazing creature work and the troubles he had getting it into theaters untouched upon it's release. Also, Mark returns with an epic google report, and I get a voicemail with some bad news.

We also announce our 1 Year Anniversary contest. If you would like to win a Bloody Good Horror T-shirt to celebrate the occasion in style, email eric@bloodygoodhorror.com with the words "T-shirt Contest" in the subject line, and don't forget your name! Contest deadline is 8/8/08 at 11:59pm. Good luck!

Lionsgate no longer doing horror

I just realized that Lionsgate is sponsoring the prize for that new Scream Queens reality show competition. The prize is a role in a Lionsgate horror film. If they're moving away from horror what is the winner going to receive? A role in their Carebares remake?

Just relistening

So upon relistening, I think that Schnaars is right. If I recall correctly, they were suggesting that these freaks were persecuted in the middle ages. If that's the case, it really does make no sense that "Midian" is outside of Toronto or whever it was. Fantasy universe or not, there was nothing but trees and maybe some Native Americans in that area at the time.

I would have to go back and rewatch it to get it totally straight. I guess I didn't fully understand what Schnaars was saying when we were recording.

I was thinking too, that

I was thinking too, that when creepy potato sack with zipper guy was going to visit Midian by car they made it look as if it was really far out in the middle of nowhere, and that Boone seemed to get their pretty damn quickly on foot. Again, nitpicky, but I noticed.

Overall though, I need to check out some more Barker jams, because I liked what I saw.

I'm a big fan of this movie

I'm a big fan of this movie as you may have guessed. I know its a classic thing to say but you really should read the book 'Cabal' as it expands on alot of the points you mention. I also think its a decent adaption as I personally think alot of Barker books would be incredibly difficult to translate to the big screen.

And you mention Doug Bradley, if Im right he plays Lylesberg the leader of 'The Tribes Of The Moon' basically the guy who initiates Boone.

Also I'd be interested what was the purpose of the ending unless they were hoping to get a sequel out of it.

Definitely

In fact, to go off your point, I didn't even really understand the ending until I read about it on Wikipedia. It was hella weird.

the ending

The novella basically ends the same way.

Comics

There's a comic series from 95 that extended the story beyond that of the book and the movie. I've got them around here somewhere, I may try and dig them out and give them a once over for a blog post.

Barker comic

Yeah, Barker has had a lot of his properties extended into the comics. He and Alex Ross teamed up at one point to do another Hellraiser story. I think Neil Gaiman actually contributed to that too. He also has his own line of comics published by marvel at one point (it's where the Warchoskis got the idea for the Matrix from).

Separated at Birth

Haven't heard the show yet (or any for the last few weeks. How did we used to live without broadband?) but I have to say- from the moment I first saw him circa Reservoir Dogs, Quentin Tarantino has always reminded me of the pointy-headed guy from Nightbreed. It's like they mated Tarantino with the guy from those old Mac Tonight MacDonald's commercials and threw in a pinch of Klingon.

first

Just wanted to say this is the first show I've listened to straight through. They all seemed to be about new movies I hadn't seen yet! ie "X-Files". I loved it though.
Just thought you gentlemen should know.
