Break out your leather gloves, espresso machine, and Italian to English dictionary: the trailer for director Luciano Onetti's giallo loveletter Francesca is ready to leap right out of the 70s and into your nightmares. Though this is a 2015 release, the look of the trailer so exemplifies that of giallo at its peak that this could easily be released as a 'lost' classic of the genre.
The plot has something to do with two detectives searching for a serial killer committing 'Dante-esque crimes' and trying to purge the city of its 'impure and damned souls', with the detectives also trying to solve a case involving the disappearance of a girl from fifteen years prior. But it's doubtful the plot will matter all that much for this film; like most of the movies
Francesca is paying homage to, it will most likely be all about style, a gloved killer, red herrings, and copious amounts of good old-fashioned blood.
This is the director's second foray into classic Italian filmmaking, as he directed 2013's
Deep Sleep (
Sonno Profondo).
Francesca stars Gustavo Delessanro, Raul Gederlini, and Evangelina Goita, and will premiere at the Sitges Film Festival in Spain on October 9th, with no relase information beyond that. For giallo fans looking for something new, this is one to keep an eye on.
