Denmark Take a Stab at Viral Outbreaks in the "What We Become" Trailer

Right from the start, the international trailer for the Danish horror flick What We Become has an air of familiarity about it. It follows a path well-worn by the multitude of zombie and outbreak movies that have come before. Even though it doesn’t appear to be breaking a ton of new ground narratively, the What We Become trailer shouldn’t be written off.

The trailer opens by establishing the serene lives of our perfectly-coiffed leading guy, his family and his new across-the-street (and soon-to-be imperiled?) love interest. This is interrupted by ominous news reports of viruses and soon those serene lives are being invaded by folks in biohazard suits combing the streets, sealing up houses with the residents inside. The family is quickly flushed from their home and from there they must wander through an ruined cityscape while fending off the vicious, blood-soaked and hollow-eyed victims of the virus.

On the bright side? First time director Bo Mikkelsen has a keen eye and the film’s effects work looks great. The trailer succeeds in building up tension through some clever and unsettling choices with its sound design. Mikkelsen also wrote What We Become. It premiered at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX. Where it goes from there currently remains to be seen.
