Blu-ray Players to Hit $99?

If you're like me, you've been waiting for that magical moment to jump on the Blu-ray bandwagon when prices dip below the mythical $150 price. Since they've won the format war, there has been no sign of the player prices dropping save for a few sparse Holiday sales last year. Well, according to Bl-ray.com however, the days of $99 players will soon be upon us thanks to the format finally being introduced to China.

the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has recently brought the high definition format to China. In order to accomplish this, they had to not only provide the technology to create Blu-ray Discs and players to Chinese manufacturers, but also create a licensing format which would lower costs and streamline the production process. One of the advantages to the rest of the Blu-ray buying world, commented Mark Leathan, Marketing Director at Samsung, was that we will soon see the "entry of the Chinese manufacturers into the Blu ray market that we will have a $99 Blu ray player."

I never thought I'd say this, but thank God for the Chinese and their shoddy manufacturing! The beauty is that this is not foreseen to be just a bargain holiday price; this may be the norm for the entry level Blu-ray players, officially bringing high definition home movies to the plebes like you and me. While I'm not a die hard pusher of the new format, I do look forward to expanding my library when it becomes affordable.
