Let’s be serious here – if you were told to write down what you thought the combined sound of Soulfly, Mastodon, the Mars Volta and the Dillinger Escape Plan would be, what are the words that come to mind? Irascible, scratchy, virile, pummeling, cacophonous, noisy, and a thousand synonyms.

…And so we come to the main stage. Mayhem Fest, in a credit to its organizers, did a much better job this year of spacing the last second stage set (Children of Bodom) and the first main stage set. The crowd was settling in but present when Amon Amarth was revealed.

Everyone has seen the video for "Thriller". Rightfully so, too, it's a great song and the video was truly revolutionary for it's time. However, it crowds out dozens of other music videos that have drawn heavily from horror films for their inspiration.

Take "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" with a little bit of "Fraggle Rock" and jack them both up on angel dust and you've pretty much got the new Mastodon video for their track "Deathbound".
