we are what we are

Top 10

10. Maniac & The Act of Killing
The only two films this year that nearly had me take a shower when they were over. One a remake of the 1980 cult classic the other a documentary that employs powerful reenactments of historical violent culls in the Philippines to reconcile the personal delusions of the perpetrators. Bonus points to Maniac for best opening horror sequence of the year.

This one comes to you literally from our Mom's basement...

A woman carefully navigates a torrential downpour as she pulls into the kind of hardware store in a kind of town where everyone has known everyone for most of their lives. It’s also the kind of hardware store that specializes in game meat processing for extra flavor. She procures a flashlight, a length of rope, a metal pipe and other materials that would perhaps raise a few eyebrows should this kindly appearing woman be a grizzly transient. But the woman doesn’t appear well. Her hands shake and raspy, blood-splattering coughs rattle from her throat.

The Milwaukee Film Festival enters its 5th year of hosting an absolute buffet of culture to the denizens of its eponymous metropolis (suck on that people of Golden Corral, Delaware!). Upwards of 200 internationally produced films spanning a century’s worth of cinema will screen over the course of 15 days beginning this Thursday (9/26) and concluding on Thursday, October 10th.

"We Are What We Are", the remake of a Mexican cannibal family flick, has added none other than Riley Keough to the cast. You might know her better as Elvis Presley's granddaughter. She's also been in a bunch of other movies and is apparently a model. But she'll aways be Elvis Presley's granddaughter that I found out existed 5 minutes ago to me.

Lionsgate has announced they hope to bring a new web series titled "Soul Survivor" to a laptop near you in the not too distant future. The series will focus an last of his kind mercenary who will be voiced by none other than Sylvester Stallone. Sounds kind of weird yes but remember when they made a Rambo cartoon? That was a lot weirder.

The sassy new Aussie flick "Crawl", which will premiere at Cannes, has been given an October release date for selected cities and VOD. The film tells the story of a bar owner who hires a Croatian hitman to murder someone only to have it backfire in his face. I assume there's also a lot of Bloomin Onions involved. Mother of god those things are good.

A handful of new names have been added to the cast list of "Beginning Of the End: The Last Exorcism 2" but honestly no one has ever heard of them so it's kind of silly to list them. So what are your plans for the weekend? Celebrating the Kentucky Derby or Cinco De Mayo? I know you could try doing a joint party but I kind of feel like you need to pick a side. Stand for something in your life god damn it! Kevin Perez, Boyana Balta, Sharice A. Williams and Gideon Hodge are the names.

The title is a good indication the family at the center of “We Are What We Are” is meant to be a bit of an enigma. The film opens with a somewhat on-the-nose indicator of the combination of social commentary and grisly horror that director Jorge Michel Grau is aiming for with his debut feature. A ragged-looking man dies outside a mannequin-filled window in a ritzy shopping mall.

IFC bolsters its new genre banner IFC Midnight as it snatches up the Mexican cannibal flick "We Are What We Are". The movie was a hit at the recent Cannes Film Festival and is labeled as being like "Let the Right One In".

How's this for an odd tie-in? George Romero will be releasing "Survival of the Dead" on the Playstation Network a few days before its theatrical debut on May 28th. What better way to watch it on the PSN than with your own PS3 Slim signed by Romero himself!

It's well known already that the classic "Famous Monsters of Filmland" magazine will be making its return to news stands. Now they're going one step further by announcing the "Famous Monsters of Filmland: Reboot" movie series! Teaming with low-budget studio Halcyon, they will be bringing re-imagined reboots of 5 classic monster franchises.
