The State of Horror: The Twilight Conundrum

This is the second in a series of monthly editorials. In addition to this particular month's topic, I'll be discussing the horror film releases for this month, as well as DVD's and whatever else is happening in the genre right now.

THE TWILIGHT CONUNDRUM

DVD Bargain Bin 3/24/09

The Bargain Bin is running light this week as DVD Tuesday rolls round, but that's okay. Aside from the store front being raped by rabid fangirls flocking for the sparkling un-dead of "Twighlight", there is little left in the way of shelving anyways. Seriously, those ladies are dangerous!

This week we see the highly anticipated release of the "Watchmen" animated companion piece, "Tales of the Black Freighter" as well as two highly anticip... Oh I can't do it. Read along to see the remainder of the loaf squeezed out in the two SciFi Channel originals joining the Watchmen!

The Haunting in Connecticut Contest!

On March 27th, 2009, Lionsgate will be releasing "The Haunting in Connecticut" into theaters nationwide. As part of their promotion, they've afforded us with some items for giveaway on the site. We're going to have 5 winners, and each will win the following:

1 Haunting in Connecticut 1-Sheet Poster
1 Haunting in Connecticut Candle

All you have to do to be in the running for the contest is go to our contact page and hit us up with an email with "Haunting in Connecticut Contest" in the subject line.

DVD Releases for 3/10/2009

Hey, guess what day it is? That's right, it's DVD Tuesday! Time to take our weekly stroll down the new release aisle. This week the spoils are light, but there is at least one must buy this week! The rest is direct to DVD trash, but you know me...trash is tops!

Box Office Special - Tempering Expectations

Now that "Watchmen" -- the story Terry Gilliam once famously called unfilmmable -- has been filmed, this weekend was audiences' first chance to weigh in on the results. Whether through good planning or a disinterest on the part of rivals to go toe to toe with a high profile project, Zack Snyder had this weekend all to himself to knock it out of the park. And at first blush, he did just that.

Comics Creepshow 30: After Watchmen?

I am going to tweak a phrase that has been completely overused recently:

Who will be watching the “Watchmen”?

The promotions department at DC Comics is hoping that you will be, along with millions of other sometime comic book fans. They are also hoping that once you are done with Zack Snyder’s panel for panel adaptation, you will get the impulse to visit your LCS (Local Comic Store in geek speak) and pick up a few of DC’s other high brow comics. To coincide with the film debut of “Watchmen”, DC is putting together a promotional event - AFTER WATCHMEN, WHAT’S NEXT?

DVD Releases For 3/3/2009

Warning to all you lactose intolerant readers out there; this week's new release column contains nothing but direct to video cheese! But, we like cheese here so that makes for a good release week!

Nina and her friends become haunted by text messages in Dead in 3 Days. 'In 3 days you're dead!'. Then they all die. In 3 days. (In case you didn't pick up on the 3 days part.)

Box Office Special - All Eyes on Watchmen

In what was the thinnest release date of the year thus far, and "Madea" has managed to pull off a second week at number one. She was down considerably in total revenue, but hey, a win is a win. One of this week's new releases, the 3-D Jonas Brothers concert film, came in at number two, while the other, "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li" bombed all the way down to number eight — though it's per screen numbers weren't nearly as bad as the total made it seem.

The State of Horror: Extreme Times

Dear Readers,

Comics Creepshow 29: The Roberts

THE ROBERTS story is only two issues, but at only two dollars more than a regular comic, and more than double the regular comic size, there really is no excuse not to go to your local shop and pick up this book. Issue one is told from the perspective of Robert Kenneth Sprunger, The Boston Strangler. Those of you who are serial killer experts might say this is impossible, since the real life Boston Strangler was incarcerated and then murdered in prison. Well, according to Robert Kenneth Sprunger’s narration, the cops got the wrong guy.
