Top 8 Versus Horror Movies

In honor of the DVD release of "Strippers vs Werewolves" this week, I'll be taking a look back at some of my all time favorite movies that feature characters pitted against each other head to head.

8. Billy the Kid vs Dracula

Date: 1966
Director: William Beaudine
Cast: John Carradine, Chuck Courtney, Melinda Plowman
The Skinny: This goofy movie centers around Dracula's plot to kidnap Billy the Kid's fiancé and convert her into his vampire bride. How does he do this, you ask? Obviousy he impersonates her uncle and kidnaps her, leaving ol' Billy to rescue her. Now this is not a great movie by any means, but it is certainly a heck of a lot of fun and it was a movie I grew up loving.

7. Alien vs Predator

Date: 2004
Director: Paul WS Anderson
Cast: Sanaa Lathan, Lance Henriksen, Raoul Bova
The Skinny: A group of scientists discover an ancient pyramid in Antarctica and find themselves caught up in a deadly battle between the two warring species. Now, I had pretty low expectations of this, so when I saw it at the theater I found myself pleasantly surprised while everyone else was griping. Decent effects and some fun campy scenes made this pretty enjoyable for me.

6. Mothra vs Godzilla

Date: 1964
Director: Ishiro Honda
Cast: Akira Takadara, Yuriko Hoshi
The Skinny: A greedy developer messes with nature while trying to create more land for the luxury condos he's building resulting in the release of Godzilla. Luckily a giant egg has also washed up on shore, pitting the heroic moth, Mothra up against Godzilla. This was always reminds me of the old days of Saturday morning cartoons followed by Saturday afternoon movies... oh, nostalgia.

5. King Kong vs Godzilla

Date: 1962
Director: Ishiro Honda
Cast: Tadao Takashima, Kenji Sahara
The Skinny: Another nostalgic favorite for me. A pharmaceutical company captures King Kong and brings him to Japan in order to gain publicity. Unfortunately, Kong escapes and battles a recently escaped Godzilla. This was the first of two Japanese films featuring King Kong and also the first time the two monsters appeared on film in color and widescreen format.

4. Freddy vs Jason

Date: 2003
Director: Ronny Yu
Cast: Robert Englund, Monica Keena, Jason Ritter, Kelly Rowland
The Skinny: Freddy's powers have grown weak as the teenagers of Elm Street have forgotten him. In order to regain his power, he resurrects Jason and summons him to Elm St. to cause a panic. As Freddy's power continues to grow as Jason continues to intrude on Freddy's victims, the two slasher favorites have it out on the Camp Crystal Lake grounds. This movie was talked about for years before it finally got to see the light of day, and honestly, at that point I probably would have watched Freddy and Jason play badminton. Lucky for me, the movie exceeded my (low) expectations and has become one of my favorite guilty pleasures.

3. Monsters vs Aliens

Date: 2009
Director: Rob Letterman, Conrad Vernon
Cast: Reese Witherspoon, Rainn Wilson, Stephen Colbert
The Skinny: A woman is transformed into a giant when she gets hit by a meteor on her wedding day. She then joins a team of monsters who join forces to battle a group of aliens trying to take over the earth. This one is kid friendly, but packs a lot of adult themed jokes, especially for fans of those crazy sci fi movies of the 1950's. Which brings me to my next pick...

2. Earth vs the Flying Saucers

Date: 1956
Director: Fred Sears
Cast: Hugh Marlowe, Joan Taylor, Donald Curtis
The Skinny: Dr. Russell Marvin, and his wife Carol accidentally record a message from a flying saucer on their tape recorder while trying to launch missiles. Dr. Russell decodes the message and encounters a plot to invade the Earth and enslave the population. This is pure 50's B-movie fun at it's best and will always be one of my all time favorite sci fi movies.

1. Tucker and Dale vs Evil

Date: 2010
Director: Eli Craig
Cast: Tyler Labine, Alan Tudyk, Katrina Bowden
The Skinny: Expecting to enjoy a relaxing vacation at their rundown mountain cabin, backwoods boys Tucker and Dale see their peaceful trip turn into a nightmare when college kids camping nearby accuse the duo of being psychotic killers. Hilariousness ensues.
