Album Review: Orphaned Land - "The Never Ending Way of ORwarriOR"

Naturally, you as the reader clicked on this article to see what I thought about the Orphaned Land album “The Never Ending Way of ORwarriOR.” You probably are curious if the music is crisp, if the riffs are edgy, if the Israeli metal band can keep pace with their counterparts in the rest of the world.

Heavy Metal News Updates!

Here's a brief smattering of things to catch you all up on!

--In response to a leak of their new album "Wasting Light," the Foo Fighters have decided to stream the entire new effort on their website. Dave Grohl was seen to say on Twitter: "Leak ? Rad. Was starting to think no one cared. Our version sounds better." "Wasting Light" officially drops April 12th.

Album Review: Blackguard - "Firefight"

In 2009, I remember telling people that the cover art for Blackguard's album "Profugus Mortis" was a near perfect representation of the music contained on the album; a flying canoe full of colonial-era drunkards being chased by an apparently clumsy demon. That picture of whimsy and imagination was curried from the cuts on "Profugus Mortis." If that was the case then, then the cover art for Blackguard's new album "Firefight," is equally representative of the music contained within. The dark, blasted, cratered landscape depicted is marked only with a single city on a rise.

Album Review: Deadlock - "Bizarro World"

Wie findest du die neues Musik von Deadlock? Ich finde sie toll!

German metallers Deadlock have ventured down a number of different paths over their career, with varying results. They’ve experimented with rap, techno, clean and scream vocals, and even a saxophone. With new album “Bizarro World,” we see the band settle into a sound and attitude that is a good fit for them.

Album Review: KEN mode - "Venerable:

Longtime noise rock veterans KEN mode drafted another bassist and went back to the drawing board for their fourth recording, "Venerable." The Canadians, freshly armed with new producer Kurt Ballou (of Converge fame,) dive into the deep end of genre with no hesitation, leaving behind tame mantras and pushing the envelope of noise rock.

"Venerable" could be said to be a fine example of the noise rock idiom, but that's hardly a complete description, is it?

Album Review: Soundgarden - "Live on I5"

Soundgarden’s new old live album “Live on I5” is an interesting time capsule of music from fifteen years ago.

Album Review: Rise Against - "Endgame"

Coming off two gold certified efforts and 2008’s largely successful “Appeal to Reason,” Rise Against is back, fresh from The Blasting Room in Colorado with twelve new tracks. The end result, “Endgame” is an ambitious and varied effort that showcases the multiple facets of Rise Against’s personality.

Album Review: Sick Puppies - "Polar Opposite"

Oh boy. This was not a good idea.

Let me begin by stating clearly, for the record, that I am generally opposed to so-called “unplugged” albums, and “Polar Opposite,” the acoustic EP from Australian three-piece Sick Puppies fits that mold. In general, acoustic albums serve mainly to rip the spine from otherwise solid tracks, and display a sensitive side that never existed.

Concert Review - Cradle of Filth

For those who have never been, the Palladium in Worcester, Massachusetts is one of the preeminent venues in the entire Mid-Atlantic or New England region. Halfway between high-ceiling theatre and dirty roadhouse proving ground, the Palladium has brilliant acoustics, great sight lines, and ample real estate for whatever type of mosh pit mayhem that might ensue. If you get a chance, scope the place out.

Album Review: Crowbar - "Sever the Wicked Hand"

The entire experience of Crowbar's "Sever the Wicked Hand" comes down to a good news/bad news equation. The good news is that "Sever the Wicked Hand" is a brutal, straightforward attack on the senses that rumbles ahead with the kind of speed-killing finality usually reserved for broken ankles and police spike strips. The bad news is that from beginning to end, that's really everything the album has to offer.
