Netflix Streaming Friday: "Dead Alive (Braindead)"

Yes. "Dead Alive" is now streaming.

For most of you, that's enough to have you go rushing to your TVs to boot your Netflix streaming device of choice up. If you're somehow unfamilar with the film "Dead Alive", you may know it under the name "Braindead".

Netflix Streaming Friday: "The Thing"

Many of you probably woke up to the unpleasant sight of snow this morning. While your gut reaction will probably be to curse a bit, contemplate moving to Florida because you're a big old baby and then trudge through the snow to brush off your car and fight traffic to work, I implore you to stop all that. Draw all the curtains and blinds in your house. Make it nice and dark. Now turn off your heat, open your doors and windows and let that cold inside.

Netflix Streaming Friday 3/24/11 - "Escape From New York"

It's the year 1997 and the United States is in trouble. World War III is raging and the United States is locked in an never-ending battle with the Soviet Union and China. Crime is on the rise and the nation's penal system is overwhelmed. In a desperate attempt to win the war on crime, the island of Manhattan is walled off and converted into a maximum security prison where the inmates run wild and no one can escape. The system seems to work well enough, until the unthinkable happens.

What if HP. Lovecraft and John Carpenter made a film together? Well, that'd be kind of weird because HP Lovecraft died before John Carpenter was even born so there'd some pretty spooky shit going on for that to happen, but forget all that. "In the Mouth of Madness" is essentially that film.

Conspiracy theories are awesome. There's just something about listening to hillbillies talking about aliens shoving shit up their asses that I find hilarious and will never get tired of hearing. The only thing better than listening to hillbillies rant and rave about aliens, the Men in Black (not the Will Smith kind) and far-reaching government conspiracies is listening to a formerly respectable, former A-lister (maybe that's a stretch) simultaneously nuke his career and do all the above.

I swear, Netflix Streaming is turning me into a big nostalgic baby. When I think of classic horror television from my childhood, there's some obvious shows that come to mind, "Tales from the Crypt", "Monsters", "The X-Files", "Dark Shadows", all that jazz. There was one that I sorta forgot about until I read it's name going through this week's new additions to Netflix's Instant Stream, but upon reading I was awash in a wave of nostalgia, "Eerie, Indiana". If you remember the show, it was that same feeling you just got.

There's nothing I love more than a shitty horror sequel that takes place in Outer Space. While everyone out there claims that "Leprechaun in the Hood" was the best "Leprechaun" movie, all the cool kids know that "Leprechaun 4: In Space" was really the best one. Disagree with me? Well, then you're not a cool kid. Deal with it.

Along those lines, my absolute favorite "Friday the 13th" film is easily "Jason X". Does it suck? Oh absolutely. But is it entertaining? Well, let me just list out some of the crazy shit that happens in this movie:

I'm turning twenty-five at the end of the month. Despite the fact that I know I'm relatively still a young guy (especially compared to Joe, ba-zing!), I'm kinda freaking out about it. As a result, when I was looking through Netflix's streaming offerings to find something to write about and stumbled across this movie, I knew exactly what I had to do; watch "Killer Klowns from Outer Space" as soon as possible.

Most of the country is frozen solid. I woke up Wednesday only to be greeted with at least an inch of ice over my balcony, a spun out moving van on the tree lawn and an inch of ice on the street below so thick that I could see if from my ninth floor apartment. And we got off lucky. It's nuts.

2010 was an odd year for the horror genre. Despite the fact that 2010 saw the most major theatrical horror releases of any recent year that I can remember, there wasn't that one "must-see" film that defined the year. If you've listened to the Best of 2010 episode of the podcast or read Schnaar's Top Ten Horror Movies of 2010 column, you know that us writers here at Bloody Good Horror had a hard time coming up with a definitive list as we all had wildly different opinions about how the year shook out.
