Revisiting: "In Search Of..."
In the Pantheon of truly eerie television shows "In Search Of" holds a seat at the head of the table. It's blend of dubiously collected evidence conveyed in documentary form, it's baleful soundtrack and some haunting verite reenactments made for a potent viewing experience.

Between 1976 and 1982, Leonard Nimoy's cold tone helped open the portals of the world's greatest mysteries, from The Yeti to the Mary Celeste. The result was a truly scary show. Still, it is not nearly the scariest project on which Nimoy served as a mouthpiece.
As yet no DVD release of the series, but there are plenty of low res. goodies on youtube to fish through if it tickles your fancy. I recommend starting with Bigfoot...

Hot damn
I loved LOVED "In Search of"! (With Leonard Nimoy, kickin' out the jams)
That shows soundtrack and Nimoy's voice scared the piss out of me so many times. They made the most mundane mysteries frightening and the Bigfoot episode had me convinced that there were Bigfeet in the woods behind my house for years.
They seriously need to do a DVD release, I'd be all over that like a fat kid on cake.
In search of...
Oh man I completely forgot about this show. I loved it as a kid. I remember the the episode on Vlad/Dracula really scaring the piss out of me. The music was so freakin weird.
Amityville
The Amityville episode got me, there's a reenactment where this doll's eyes open and they are blazing red. I had already seen the Amityville Horror movie and it didn't scare me, but that episode did. I slept at the foot of my parent's bed after watching that.
Anyone remember?
The Simpsons parody of this where the show ends early and Nemoy drives away? Good stuff.
Also, I once had a long conversation about this and had to look it up, according to leading "cryptozoologists" (that's not a real job, is it? And if it is, what does it take to add the quantifier "leading"?) the plural of Bigfoot is Bigfoot. My friend thought it was Bigfeet, I thought it was Bigfoots. As usual, the internet settles all ridiculous arguments.
South Park
They had a good parody in the Al Gore/Man-Bear-Pig episode of South Park too! It's when Al was dressing up trying to scare the towns people into believing in the 'manbearpig'!
Hmmm...
Apparently Big Foot sees in "fish eye lens" vision. Very interesting breakthrough!
I was never an avid watcher of the show, but every once in a while you'll see the show on crappy cable channels and I'll be damned if I don't have to sit down and watch them every time they're on. What a cool, bizarre little 70's oddity.
Reboot
I think they tried to do a revamp of this show a few years ago with Mitch Pileggi narrating/hosting, and it was just godawful. Still, as has been mentioned, Tenacious D was correct in stating "In Search of... Sasquatch, that was a kick-ass In Search Of..."
