The October Challenge Week 1
Well, I threatened you all this week with my October Challenge, 31 movies in 31 days, so here is our first recap! I'm three days in and 4 movies up, so off to a good start! Also of note to nobody but me, "Idle Hands" clocked in as the 200th movie I've watched this year! Scary shit indeed.
Day 1

Well, it was a work at home day and I haven't been sleeping well. Good thing I found Argento's conclusion to his 'Three Mothers' trilogy, because it was pretty boring. If there is one thing that Argento carried over from the first two flicks, it's the convoluted story line. Blink once and you're lost for the entirety of the movie. However, the gore here was top notch! There was some great kills and what not, so that helps. This movie also helped sway me to Eric's way of thinking for a bit as Asia Argento actually looks pretty good when she cleans up!

I've been waiting for this bad boy for a long ass time and thanks to Fearnet, I finally get to see it! Honestly? It was worth the wait because I LOVED it! The story kept me pulled in throughout and I honestly didn't find anything that left a bad taste in my mouth. Vinnie Jones as Mahogany was great and his whole cro-mag brow thing made or some great shots of shadowed eyes and generally creepiness. The gore was off the hook too and I dare say the slow motion effects used for some of them added to them! How often do you hear me say that?
Day 2

I love "The Gate". It's a guilty pleasure more than anything, but it's both nostalgic and campy. Hell, Stephen Dorff calling people 'fart face'! How can you get any better? His buddy Terrence was the true highlight with his studded denim vest and his love for black metal. There's really not much that I'd deem scary here, but it's plain old 80's fun. The puppets are great as are the rubber suits, etc. In this day and age of CGI, it's fun to look at what filmmakers did to make 'master demons'; they did it well too.

Devon who? Devon Sawa? Remember that guy? His lovable stoner shtick worked well here, especially when pared with Seth Green and Eldon Henson. This movie ain't going to win any Oscars but it's good for a laugh. Plus, you get Jessica Alba in her undies. Who can turn that down? The story's pretty loose but works out. What turns into a severed hand flick a la 'The Crawling Hand' in 1963. At least time they just went straight for the zany as opposed to trying to take themselves seriously.
Moving On...
There's plenty more on deck for the weekend, enough so that I have no idea where I'm heading next! I have a handful of classics and modern flicks to choose from so we'll see where the whimsy takes me! You want to challenge me? Post up your suggestions and I'll do what I can to work them in! Just remember though people, this is a 'Challenge'! Don't suggest the easy stuff like "Friday the 13th" or "Halloween"... make me work for it!
"Halloween 3: Season of the Witch" is an acceptable one though cause christ, that's a challenge for anybody to sit through! Well, anybody but Eric!

Ted Raimi scene in MMT
That was my favorite scene! I want that scene as an avatar! That movie rocked balls!!!
This seems like a daunting task, 31 movies in 31 days but I'm sure you will survive! Can't wait to read more!
Suggestion: Boogeyman 1 & 2. (I think the 2nd one is much better than the first. The first one had a nice concept but terrible execution).

Catchin' bullets with her teeth since 1977
Boogey 2
Ya know, I was just looking at this the other night trying to think if I'd seen it yet or not! That's a good add on, I'll hunt it up! You say it's better than #1 so now I'm curious!
Dude
How dare you besmirch the good name of Halloween III, it's a great B movie!
And I'm a huge fan of Idle Hands. It was certainly during a "down" time of the genre, but it's a fantastic little teenage horror comedy. It doesn't hurt that it has a barely legal Jessica Alba in a skimpy Halloween costume either ;) One of my favorites.
The Gate? My memories were better but you've got to love the claymation, and the poster art, good times.
H3
Haha I threw that in there just for you for declaring me the 'PC Guy' :D
I love Seth Green & his stoner buddy in "Idle Hands". They help make the movie for sure. That and the fact that Seth Green's beer bottle made sloshing noises every time he moved! The scariest thing though, I was looking through the IMDb entry last night, and most of those guys are my age! Seth Green seems to never age, just change hair styles.
Halloween 3
I think gets a bad rap. I think having the Halloween title against it is what hurts it. But come on, a week or so leading up to Halloween you're all singing that song.
Halloween III is a great film
Halloween III is awesome. Just call it Season of the Witch & forget the Halloween part. It's got a great soundtrack too. The synth score is really creepy. That stupid 8 More Days song is annoying as hell but who cares? This has Tom Atkins in it!
Idle Hands gets 7 thumbs up from me. It's a stupid film but Jessica Alba is cute & the cast is pretty damn funny.

Some suggestion from my Vipco Screamtime Collection include Buddy Cooper's The Mutilator, Spookies or one of my favourite Fulci films City Of The Living Dead/Gates Of Hell.
Or my favourite horror comedy Funny Man.

I've taken on the challenge
So Casey, I am up for the challenge. I've been diligently watching a movie a day (more or less). It's 7 days into October and I am 8 movies richer for it. Here's my brief recap of week one:
Texas Chainsaw 2003: Nice remake. I was a little ashamed of myself for not having watched this one before, but better late than never.
Texas Chainsaw the Beginning: Mostly a remake to the remake, but I enjoyed seeing how the sherriff came to be, why grandpa is legless, where the sherriff's teeth went, and where the human face mask got its origin. Creepy stuff, but mostly a rehash of the 2003 movie
The Village and the 6th Sense: These 2 movies hold up better to me than some of his others. I admit to being disappointed by Unbreakable, but it probably merits another viewing just in case. Signs is Ok, but not one for repeated viewings. And I will NEVER watch Lady in the Water again. Those were 2 hours I will never get back. But I did enjoy re-watching these two movies this week. Someone with more time than me and perhaps a pending film school dissertation to write could pick apart the use of the color red in both of these movies. Once you notice it, you can't UN-notice it.
Evil Dead II: It had been too long since I had seen this one, and I enjoy it. But I miss the sheer creepy terror from the first one.
Night of the Living Dead: The 1968 version. I was looking for some old school horor action to sink my teeth into.
The Ring: In my humble opinion, one of the best J-horror remakes. The grudge does not do it for me, and the Ring will always be superior. Again, it's only my opinion...
Children of the Corn 3: Don't ask, it was on sale for $5 at Best Buy. Although the death scenes were amped up in the gore department compared to what I remember in the original. Not a bad movie. I carved my first pumpkin of the year while watching this one. It is definitely one that doesn't require your undivided attention.
Well, I am new here at the forums, so I hope to talk at you again soon.
Evil Dead II
Welcome to the site man!, glad you're joining us.
I wish I had time to watch 1 movie a day, but unfortunately it's not going to happen. That said, I agree with your assessment on Evil Dead II... where's the scary? It will always bother me because it's neither fish nor foul. It's not scary like the original, and it's not nearly as fun/funny as Army of Darkness. So I'm just not a huge fan.
Evi Dead II: Deader!
I can agree that Evil Dead 2 isn't as scary, but it still holds a special place as it helped to form Bruce Campbell into the icon we all know and love! With his ham handed (chainsaw handed?) antics, he wouldn't be as well known to us.
Beyond that, welcome aboard and congrats on taking the challenge! That's a good start you have going there for sure! I too have a strange draw to the Children of the Corn series. Not sure why, maybe it's because I'm from Indiana? (Eric will say that this is definitely the case) As awful as the sequels are, I still wind up watching them at one point or another!
I have to disagree with you on the Shyamalan films though. Unbreakable is probably about my favorite of his flicks. I'm an old school comic book nerd though so I may be biased! It was a big chance after Sixth Sense which may put some people off of it, but I thought it was a great origin story for a hero/villain duo!
Keep watching, I'll have a huge challenge update on Friday!
