Oh boy folks, here it is, our first look at Jackie Earl Haley as Freddy Krueger!
Debuting at 3am for some odd reason, this trailer is the talk of the internet this morning. While it doesn't give away the whole story, it does give us some good looks at the new man in action.
For myself, this looks positive! While I'm still not wild about the idea of a "Nightmare" remake, I can get onboard with a darker take on the story sans the wisecracks and one-liners! Haley appears to be spot on in the part and I like that they've fleshed out the origin a bit as well. The biggest change here is the new make up on burn victim Freddy, aiming to make him look more like a real burn victim. While we do not get a long shot at it, I think what we do see works!
Fuck. Alright, color me

Alright, color me excited. It looks good, really good. I like the visuals, the dream stuff looks appropriately creepy and the Krueger voice and make-up are definitely disturbing but also different enough from what came before to stand on their own. I'm on board.

Looks decent
Submitted by peloquin on Mon, 09/28/2009 - 17:07.God it seem like forever I've been wanting to see this trailer. It does look pretty decent and will definately be seeing it. The only issue I had is how he was kinda begging in the burning scene. I just don't imagine ol' Fred would do that.

Human
Submitted by Casey on Mon, 09/28/2009 - 19:45.I dunno, kind of worked for me. Made him a bit more human. I always thought that the only way a remake of this would work is if they did away with the wisecracks and made it a lot darker and a little more gritty. Humanizing Freddy a bit is a good way to make it a little bit scarier I think.

Submitted by peloquin on Mon, 09/28/2009 - 20:24.I was more refering to the character of Fred Krueger, admittedly this is a new thing, but is he still not the evil child killer? I just don't expect someone who has hunted and killed children, then going on to be one of the scariest killers of all time to be begging for his life like that. I knw in the Freddys Nightmares TV series they made it out like he knew he would come back, and thats not what I was looking for, but I think he would have been taunting them rather than begging for his life.
It fits in with all this humanisation that seems to be happening to the old horror icons though, Jason was alot more human in the new F13 and the same applies to Michael Myers. I just feel theres something to be said for them not being humanised though that creates more of a mythos behind the character, rather than him just being a person.

Hmm.
Submitted by John Shelton on Mon, 09/28/2009 - 21:06.Not that I have much personal experience with them (thankfully), but I'd guess that most child molesters/killers are weak little bitches who prey on the defenseless and would start whimpering and whining when faced with someone their own size.
Then again, if this really isn't your father's Freddy- maybe he's actually innocent. That would certainly put a whole new spin on the series.
I've been fooled so many times by trailer hype that I try not to let them sway me either way but... this looks like it might be alright. Given the track record of, oh, every single 80s horror movie remake ever made, I'm still sure they'll find some way to screw it up.
Goose and gander.

Here's what I don't get about horror fans: "humanizing" is exactly what Rob Zombie did for Michael Myers, yet everyone had a conniption over it! Why is it okay to "humanize" a demonic master of dreams, but not a hulking guy in a mask?
Humanizing
Submitted by Prisoner Abel on Tue, 09/29/2009 - 01:29.Personally for me the difference is what was the basis of the character. Freddy was a child killer/molester, so humanizing makes him more recognizable and sympathetic and therefore more unsettling. Michael was a force of nature, where was no reason for his killings. He's just evil, which is what makes him scary, because he could be anyone at anytime. Humanizing him detracts from that, it gives a reason for his actions and therefore makes them more definable and unique. The new Michael Myers couldn't be anyone or happen at anytime because he's now a specific person shaped by specific events.

I don't want to get my hopes up
Submitted by Joe on Mon, 09/28/2009 - 18:12.But looks pretty good. His voice kind of sounds like he's got a mouth guard in but still it looks like a pretty good remake. Jackie Earle Haley can't really do any wrong right now, and that guy can play the hell out of a kiddie toucher.
Meh
Submitted by phronk on Mon, 09/28/2009 - 18:15.It looks okay. I don't see much of a point in remakes of exact shots from the original movie, though. And Freddy looks a bit like the monsters from The Descent, just like EVERY MONSTER IN EVERY MOVIE LATELY.
It does have potential. We'll see.
Burn victim
Submitted by Prisoner Abel on Mon, 09/28/2009 - 19:36.I think he's meant to look like pesron who's third degree burns have healed. Which as someone who's spent some time in a burn ward I can tell you is usually pretty disturbing looking.
And it's not like the Descent creatures were particularly original in their design either.

Talk about bland
Submitted by stonemanrockguy on Mon, 09/28/2009 - 19:04.This trailer left me feeling blank. It was a cypher. Except for the beginning, the rest was a random bunch of flash cut nonsense. How are you supposed to get any sense of the movie from that?
This trailer relies entirely on the viewer having already seen the first one. The only feelings I had were surprise at seeing several scenes lifted from the original in the trailer. Other than that, this trailer tells me nothing i don't already know other than it might actually be scary (it IS a horror movie after all)
Teaser
Submitted by Casey on Mon, 09/28/2009 - 19:43.Yah, but it's a teaser trailer though. Not supposed to give you too much yet. They through in the familiar stuff just to get you excited in the 'ooo, I remember that!' sort of way.
I'm in.
Submitted by Chrissie on Mon, 09/28/2009 - 20:22.I'm a bit uncertain about the beginning part that makes him look sympathetic, but I'm on board with the burn makeup. I'm wondering how much it will hinder his ability to express, since it's supposed to be realistic burn makeup and all, he probably won't be able to move his face as much, which would be interesting.
So far I'm excited, but I'm waiting for the catch. There is always a catch.
Cockteasing.
Submitted by Louis Fowler on Tue, 09/29/2009 - 00:14.I agree. I remember when I got all half-mast for the FRIDAY THE 13th remake teaser (and trailer too). And look how that turned out.
I like that this appears
Submitted by mark on Mon, 09/28/2009 - 20:41.I like that this appears more serious and dark in tone than even the original, but I agree with Chrissie that there's almost always a catch.
Also, I love that it was being produced by Michael Bay and the first thing we see is something getting lit on fire. I know it's not going to be THAT type of movie, but I giggled.

Submitted by Jon on Mon, 09/28/2009 - 22:14.If this has any hope of capturing the magic of the F13 remake, they damn sure better give Freddy some sort of hidey-hole where he keeps dolls or collections of human hair or something. Because we all know that's what makes a horror remake work damnit!
Can't be worse than Halloween...
Submitted by Shaolin Monkey on Tue, 09/29/2009 - 00:32.Not going to look into this trailer too much, I mean it looks decent, and if anyone has to replace England I'd say they've got the casting right. But hell, Friday the 13th didn't look bad from the trailer, and look how that turned out...
It certainly looks like they're going for a darker approach, though I won't be surprised by the news that they've made cuts to get a PG-13 rating at the cinema.
Is it me or does that swimming pool looking vaguely reminiscent of the end of Nightmare 2? Not sure homoerotic towel whippings is on the list of Michael Bay film making clichés yet..
Just Can't Get Behind It
Submitted by CG34 on Thu, 10/01/2009 - 08:10.I am pretty relaxed on most remakes, save the Halloween reboot and potential American Werewolf in London remake, but the way this one is shaping up just doesn't work for me. I don't like the way Freddy has been turned into a "nice guy", it's completely against his history and relevance for the character. I don't want to sympathize with the demon master of dreams.
