Pumpkin Beer Bash Vol 1

Tis the season for pumpkin beers! If you've been in a grocery/liquor/beer store in the past few weeks you've noticed it's that time of year where breweries all across the country are putting their seasonal pumpkin beers up for sale. I've had numerous friends ask me about pumpkin beers lately, so I decided that in honor of the season (and Eric's upcoming Pumpkinhead article in HorrorHound), I would review 13 pumpkin beers between now and Halloween. First, the scale, in pumpkinheads (obviously).

x5

A worthy brew for any season. Find and drink immediately!

x4

A respectable concoction. More than worth a shot once a year.

x3

Not a beer to turn down, but not one to sell your first born for either

x2

Pass this by and drink a GOOD beer while eating pumpkin seeds.

x1

Drink some Ipecac and save yourself the trouble.

This week, I take a look at Dogfish Head Punkin Ale and Brooklyn Brewery's Post Road Pumpkin Ale.

Dogfish Head Punkin Ale

They say: "A full bodied brown ale brewed with real pumpkin, brown sugar, allspice, cinnamon & nutmeg."
I say: In this case, "brewed with" doesn't necessarily mean "tastes like." There are very faint hints of spice, barely any taste of pumpkin, and a very malty, beer-y taste. It's not a terrible beer, but also not a very impressive pumpkin beer.

Rating

Post Road Pumpkin Ale

They say: "...a delicious rendition of this traditional American classic."
I say: A good beer? Sure. Classic? Not so much. "Post Road" has a strong vegetable pumpkin taste, but not the "pumpkin pie" taste that most pumpkin beers are noted for. The spices in this beer are present and somewhat pleasant. Make sure to drink this cold, because it starts to get strongly assy near the end.

this is an amazing series

I love beer. I love pumpkin. I love pumpkin beer.
Brilliant idea!

Assy

There may be no better descriptor of bad beer flavor than the word "assy." I couldn't even define it if I had to, but anyone who's ever tasted it knows exactly what it is.

Craft Brews

I'm a big beer geek and home brewery so it's great to see this on the site. I got to meet Garrett Oliver brewmaster of the Brooklyn Brewery and Sam Calagione President of Dogfish Head Brewery a few months back and they were both great guys.

The trouble I usually have with Pumpkin beers and flavored beers in general is a lot of time they don't have enough of the fruit or vegetable they are trying to show off. That being said though Dogfish and Brooklyn are two of my favorite breweries out there right now. They're both doing pretty amazing things with beer.

I'm a HUGE Brooklyn fan so I

I'm a HUGE Brooklyn fan so I was a bit conflicted in reviewing the Post Rd Pumpkin Ale. I actually had it at the Flower City Brewers Fest in Rochester a month or two ago and loved it, only to realize it was probably because I was already a half a dozen beers deep or so at that point. That being said, Brooklyn Lager has replaced Anchor Steam in the old standby position above grocery store beers and below the super-fancy in my beer repertoire.

The jury's still out on the dogfish.

Brooklyn

Yeah I am a big fan. I've never had a bad beer from their, a few months back I went to the American Beer Fest in Boston and Garret was at the booth pouring. He gave a pretty great talk also about pairing beer with food and useing fresh ingredients in beer in general.

I'm a huge fan of Dogfish. They've definitely put out some beers I haven't been a fan of but at the end of the day you've got to respect the stuff Sam and the brewers are doing. Some really amazing beers. If you're a fan of hoppy beers their 60, 90 and 120 minute IPA's are really the best around. The wofe took me down to their brewery and brewpub last Valentines day and they were filtering the 90 through fresh hops as they poured it, it was unreal.

Alright I'll stop geeking out now.

Geek on brother! I've heard

Geek on brother! I've heard good things about the 120 IPA so that's on the top of my list. Also, any girl that takes you to a brewpub on Valentines Day is a bonafide keeper, and I'm sure I didn't have to tell you that.

I look forward to your continued nerdery for the next 6 weeks :)

120 Minute IPA

It's good stuff but we're also talking about a 20% abv beer here, and at about 9 bucks a bottle (that's 12 oz. only) it's not the kind of beer you're going to sit down and have a few of. Still it's something I would recommend trying. The 60 minute on the other hand is a nice 6% abv and pretty nice to grab a six pack of when watching a movie. The 90 minute only comes in 4 packs and pushed 9% abv and goes to your head pretty quickly.

I knew it was high, but 20%

I knew it was high, but 20% may be just outside of my range. I think the alcy-est beer I've ever had is the Rogue Old Crustacean Barleywine Ale, which was 11.5%, which tasted of cigarette ashes, fish, and coffee grinds, and I actually mean that in a good way. It did however, totally knock me on my tits, leaving me to save it for only the special-est of occasions.

Rogue

I haven't tried pumpkin beer yet, but it's officially on the grocery list now!

I've been a big fan of Rogue Brewery's beers for awhile now. Then and Stone Brewery. I <3 the Rogue Mocha Porter....chocolate, coffee and beer. Mmmm. Stone's Smoked Porter's pretty awesome too, though Mark probably wouldn't care for it since he's all veggie and stuff. I say that cause it almost tastes like a steak!

mark's picture

I never said I didn't like

I never said I didn't like the TASTE of steak ;) If it doesn't have anything that breathes in it I'm all for it!

joeycnews's picture

Rogue Brewery

Yeah man, the Mocha Porter is great, I'm a big fan. Their Chocolate Stout is really good also.

Stone is putting out some pretty kick ass beers and their Arrogant Bastard Ale has a pretty evil looking devil on the label so it's good for Halloween.

Update

Post Rd Pumpkin Ale found me a bit more favorably on a second try. Still a 3, but pretty good for what it's worth.

Also, I'm now sipping on the Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA and holy shit is it delicious and full of alcohol! Joey C for the win, again :)

"The Brood" and Brew

Glad to hear you liked the 90 Minute. I'm a big fan of all their stuff but the 60 and 90 are my standbys. Usually in the Summer time they have an Aprihop, a hopped up Apricot Ale that is really good also.

I downed a few Sawtooth Ale's from Left Hand Brewing tonight while watching "The Brood". Really good beer from Colorado you should pick up if you can find it. I think I'm going to need to be a little tipsy tonight to get to sleep because the movie freaked the shit out of me

Dogfish Head Punkin Ale

After a long day at work I tracked this one down. I ended up drinking the 4 pack tonight and I think think I may be in love. This might be one of my favorite Pumpkin beers I've ever head. On a side note I'm drunk.

Dogfish Punkin Ale Bread

made this tonight and it's mighty good.

Seriously I think I have a drinking problem.

I just may try to bust this

I just may try to bust this out at the Newell family Thanksgiving! Thanks for the tip!

joeycnews's picture

Came out pretty good

it was pretty easy also, only took about 10 minutes to make and then an hour in the over.

We're talking baking now, I fear I've ruined a perfectly good horror site.

Well...

You guys are starting to scare me if that's any consolation.
