I've been excited about a Wonder Woman movie

It seems as of late comic book movies are unstoppable. From mainstream favorites like Batman to the more cultish Watchmen, everyone seems to be getting their moment on the big screen. Why not Wonder Woman?

This list, entitled "10 Reasons No One Cares About Wonder Woman", infuriated me. Then I actually read it. It's pretty dead on. I mean, I thought I wanted more Wonder Woman, but this list makes some valid points.

I think it was probably just the pseudo feminist in me, or the Lynda Carter fan, or the fact that I went positively bananas when Joss Whedon was attached to the film that made me excited for it. Without Joss my interest has wained quite a bit. I'm also pretty sure that Lynda Carter circa 1976 won't be cast in any new projects. Could Wonder Woman even be spun into a fantastic flick?

Those are good points

With Wonder woman you'd have to go the gritty route and reinvent her as a trauma survivor, I think. Right or wrong, a greek goddess type superwoman just isn't gonna catch fire in today's market. I'd almost see her being borderline malignant. An average woman who has fashioned her power ala batman. Maybe at first revenge is the only goal and then she has an epiphany. Then again, the name wonder woman wouldn't work except from an ironic standpoint .

I think Wonder Woman would work best as a period piece, like the first season of the TV show. Today it's not a big deal to see a woman kick ass but put her in a proto-feminist WWII setting and you've got some added relevance. All the men would have age-appropriate attitudes towards women (think Mad Men), but then you add in a liberated, super-powered Amazonian goddess who takes no shit and watch the sparks fly. In the hands of a decent writer, WW's lack of a identifiable nemesis and supporting characters could be an asset. Iron Man's a pretty B-list character but the movie had the right cast and crew and turned out great.

Nazi's are the way to go...

I completely agree. I think the movie would do well in that WWll setting. I loved the first season of the TV series simply because that character stands out so well. While the dialogue was painful in parts (Steve Trevor asking Wonder Woman after she has saved him by lifting a jeep off the ground, "but can you cook too?"), seeing a woman character who acts differently than the social norms of the time was fascinating. I even like Diana Prince at this time as well.
?Set in present day, the series just became ridiculous, unbelievable and incredibly boring.
While I admit I'd probably go see a Wonder Woman movie no matter what, it would be great to see an interesting story. That is one of the reasons I mourn the loss of Joss Whedon from the project. Although in reality, it might never have happened as the man is know for taking his time with things and working on 12 things at once...

I agree with the idea of

I agree with the idea of making it a period piece, but I also think it could be done in a hyper-stylized way to make it seem much more fictional as opposed to a Wonder Woman among the real people scenario. Either way, it would be extremely difficult to pull off.

wonder woman doesn't work

Wonder woman as a character has never really worked or made sense. This is the cause behind most of the points on that list. Most super-heroes can be summed up in a sentence or two. But the more you say about Wonder Woman the less sense she makes. She's an amazon warrior made from clay who was sent to mankind to teach them peace by... beating people up? Who flies an invisible plane? I mean even her origin in reality made no sense. She was created to teach girls self-esteem but spent most of her time getting tied up in softcore bondage fantasies.

Essentially, I think the way to go now would be a more fish out of water tale. Self-reliant Amazon warrior sent to teach mankind peace finds us utterly brutish, chauvinistic and confusing. I mean she's essentially has been living in Ancient Greece until she comes to America. The other way to go would be to play of the Mythical and grandiose elements of her Origin. Make the villain of the film ARES, GOD OF WAR, and have her fighting Hydras and Minotaurs in the streets of New York.
