Splatterhouse on XB360/PS3!

In searching for pictures of the original "Splatterhouse" video game to go with a blog post begging for a modern revamp of the series, I stumbled on something that many horror and video game nerds have known for some time: IT'S ACTUALLY HAPPENING. Granted, I've only played the "Splatterhouse" games on an emulator, but I was always fascinated with the featuring Jason-esque protagonist in ultraviolent (for the time) 2d beat-em-up mayhem. I would have been happy with a re-skinning for XBox Live Arcade, but this is something totally different and exciting!

The developer behind the game is BottleRocket, who in various incarnations were responsible for the Sony PS2 hits Mark of Kri and Rise of the Kasai. Both of those games were attractive (they basically looked like a Disney film in terms of character design and animation) and -- belying the smooth graphics -- surprisingly violent. This made BottleRocket a solid choice to develop the revival of Namco Bandai's hyper-violent action series, which will arrive on both PS3 and Xbox 360 sometime around mid-2009. You can look at the in-game model of Rick above to get an idea of what the actual game looks like...

Some have complained about the departure from the more human-esque rendering of Rick from the first three games, but honestly, how could this dude be any less badass? Plus, I'm not inclined to knock anyone that shows the same taste in cutoff jean shorts. Color me completely fucking stoked for Splatterhouse 2009, and shenanigans on me for not finding out sooner!

gore

I saw the article for this in Gamepro and the gore looks so over the top, it's great. Plus instead of a health bar you'll see the damage on Rick's body. So his skin and muscle get torn away the more hurt he gets.

That sounds amazing

There have been many attempts of breaking out of the tried and true "engergy bar" in video game history, and I'm not sure that they've ever been truly successful.

That however, sounds freaking amazing. A little bummed that the mask isn't really a hockey mask though... guess they were worried about lawsuits this time around. Probably a good idea.

As long as you'll be able to

As long as you'll be able to punch a monster's head off of their shoulders, I'll be happy.

Ripped apart

The images were pretty brutal so I'd say you can do far more than that. And the 2x4 makes a come back as well.

Id be surprised if its

Id be surprised if its actually any good though, most of these revamping of old classics dont turn out very well. Anyone played the new Altered Beast or Shinobi, both utter garbage.

Love the first 2 games though, the first was brutally hard. The third one was a bit poo though, although it did have a cool feature with the timed endings.

Also seeing as were on the subject of gaming, any of you on Live/PSN, could get a game going sometime?

Even in the early stages,

Even in the early stages, this seems way more inspired than the two examples you mentioned. Also, you have to consider that Splatterhouse was much more of a cult game than say, Shinobi specifically. This seems like a complete retooling as if the originals had never happened, which in this case I think is totally fine.

It was awesome on the Turbo Graphix 16

I used to own a TG16 and played the hell out of that game. I will most likely get this on the PSN. It's looking good so far!
