Blood Bowl Teaser Trailer

Upon hearing the title of this game and watching the first 20 or so seconds of this trailer (counting the 10 seconds of logo bullshit) I thought to myself "mutant league football on a next gen system, finally!" and then I read this silliness...

A brutal team sport unfolding in a parallel fantasy world based on Warhammer and American football, Blood Bowl invites gamers to form a team of players from races including: Orcs, Elves, Humans, Dwarfs and many other fantasy creatures, and launch themselves into battle in the bloodiest of arenas. This strategy sports game combines a fine balance of tactics and bone crunching action.

Gag me with a fucking orc club! Strategy sports game?! It's not like sports games as vehicles for game franchises are anything new, dating back to the days of Mega Man Soccer on the SNES, but christ! This game, at least in title and appearance, had the potential to actually deserve the "blood" in it's title, you know, with orcs punching oppoonents heads off and the like, but I've already heard whisperings of the option of "turn-based gameplay", which sounds about as exciting to me as watching grass grow and makes me want to forget I ever got excited about this title.

Thoughts?

Simmer Down

I wouldn't read too much into that quote about the strategy/sports combo. It's really not that big a deal, and in a lot of ways I think you could argue that "Madden," the end-all-be-all of football gaming, could actually be considered a strategy game. I've written about this some before with Madden, but my guess is that Blood Bowl will be like a gorier version of the relatively recent Mario baseball game or even Super Strikers, both of which had strategy elements, but were, at their core, sports games.

Mutant Football League was terrific, as was another old NES game that could probably be lumped into this genre of strategy/sports: Base Wars.

I'll see your Base Wars

And raise you Cyberball. Any game that replaces the down system with the hilariously sexy sounding "ball status" (fourth down = ball status CRITICAL) is alright by me.

That being said, I may have been a bit too riled up about this game, but like I said, the title and the overall premise has tremendous potential. I think for their sake though, they should think more Blitz and less Madden, and make the action as off-the-wall and cartoony violent as possible, at least if they want my buy haha

Bball

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember there being some type of "mutant" basketball game back in the day too. I would imagine it was for NES, which would explain my fuzzy memory.

Hockey

Im pretty sure there was a hockey version of Mutant League too. IN ML Football was the only American Football game I ever actually got into, as with most of us Brits I have absolutley no idea of the rules but the madness of it all compelled to me to just keep playing and hope I did something right

In this book, I collected all the prophecies of Eibon, handed down from generation to generation over more than 4,000 years.

Mutant League Hockey was my

Mutant League Hockey was my favorite Genesis game of all time, seriously. I really wish someone would get off their ass and either put it on Xbox Live Arcade or rework it fully for a next gen system.
