Box Office Special - Strangers Sets a New High Bar

Only a few days after Hollywood literally blew up, the box office figuratively blew up to the tune of over $172 million, a new single weekend high for 2008. Credit this surge to two new high profile films piggy-backing on the success of other niche fare.

For TV Horrors, Shorter is Better

Spurred by last night's premiere of "Fear Itself," I've been thinking a lot about television horror. About two years ago, my old roommates and I decided to switch from Time Warner Cable (aka Satan's Cable Service) to DirecTV. Ostensibly this change was about better sports coverage, but it came with an added bonus: Chiller.

Horror Headlines 5/6/08

At this point I'm convinced that the people at Lions Gate wait until we have our new release page in order, and then they start shifting stuff around just to mess with me. That said, "Midnight Meat Train" has been moved from July 11th to August 1st. I'm pretty sure we're never seeing this movie at this point.

New Vampire pics from "The Lost Boys II". It's pretty amazing how they managed to keep their perfectly quaffed hair even though they've been turned into bloodsuckers. I guess this film is staying truer to the spirit of the 80's than we thought.

Brittany Murphy is set to star in a horror film called "Deadline", about a "scribe who travels to a house to write a screenplay and overcome a bout of writer's block, when unforseen events lead to a psychological breakdown". Wait, Brittany Murphy as a writer? Are you sure this isn't a comedy?

If you love "Halloween" and comic books, you're in luck. A whole bunch of "Halloween" comic books are going to be coming out. It's not exactly my bag, but anything Myers related is always cool in my book.

Sam Raimi would still like to have a young director remake "The Evil Dead" under his "Ghosthouse Pictures" banner, but he also says he has done absolutely nothing in regards to the project.

Richard Kelly's long awaited "The Box", will be released on March 20th, 2009. A long ways away, but hopefully worth it.

In Real People News:

The Lake City Tourism Bureau in Minnesota has helped set up a $50,000 reward for the capture of a sea monter purported to be swimming around Lake Pepin. Many locals have claimed to have seen the creature, and there are even Native American legends about creatures in the lake ruining their boats. $50,000 is a pretty sweet reward I must say. Well what are you waiting for?

"Goth Rock couple caught having sex in church confessional booth" is the kind of headline that makes getting up in the morning totally worth it.

On this day in history:

1985: Authorities in Embu, Brazil exhume the grave of one Wolfgang Gerhard in order to determine its true identity. The remains are later proven to be those of Dr. Josef Mengele, Auschwitz's notorious "Angel of Death." Mengele is thought to have drowned while swimming in the ocean in February 1979.

Gonzo: the Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

For those of you not in the know, Hunter Thompson coined the term 'Gonzo Journalism'. We've all see the Fear and Loathing side of the man, now get an in depth view at the life of the madman.

For me as a fan, this trailer looks great! The fact that they got Jimmy Carter, Pat Buchanan, George McGovern, many of the people HST spoke against, says a lot about the impression the man left on the world.

The documentary is scheduled for a July 4th release. If you're new to HST, this looks like it'll be a great jumping on point. If you're a long time fan, it looks to be a nice look back.
